Shinsekai Guide: Experience Retro Osaka Vibes and Crispy Kushikatsu
Shinsekai is like a time capsule of old Osaka. Developed in the early 1900s, it has a nostalgic, retro atmosphere that feels very different from the modern areas of Umeda or Namba.
Table of Contents
Must-See: Tsutenkaku Tower
The symbol of Shinsekai is Tsutenkaku Tower.
The View: You can see the whole city from the observatory.
The Slide: Recently, a giant 60-meter slide called “Tower Slider” was added. It’s a huge hit with thrill-seekers!

Food: The Home of Kushikatsu
Shinsekai is the best place to try Kushikatsu (deep-fried meat and vegetable skewers).
Top Pick: Kushikatsu Daruma.

This is the most famous shop, recognizable by the angry-looking statue of the chef.
The Rule: Just like in Dotonbori, remember: “No Double-Dipping!”
Photo Spot: Billiken & Colorful Signs

Don’t forget to take photos with the Billiken statues (the god of happiness) and the giant pufferfish or octopus signs. The street with Tsutenkaku in the background is one of the most Instagrammable spots in Japan!
Access & Safety
Access: Closest stations are Shin-Imamiya (JR) or Ebisucho (Subway).
Tips: Shinsekai is very safe during the day, but it can feel a bit “deep” at night. Stick to the main tourist streets, and you’ll have a fantastic time!
