Osaka to Kyoto Train Guide (2026): The Best Way to Go (JR vs. Hankyu vs. Keihan)

There are three main train lines connecting Osaka and Kyoto. Most people just take the JR, but depending on your hotel location and destination in Kyoto, Hankyu or Keihan might be much better. Let’s find the smartest way for you!

Comparison Table

JR Line
Start: Osaka / Shin-Osaka Staition
↓ 580 JPY
End: Kyoto Station

Best for: Speed, JR Pass users
Hankyu Line
Start: Umeda Staition
↓ 410 JPY
End: Kyoto-Kawaramachi Staition

Best for: Shopping, Gion, Arashiyama
Keihan Line
Start: Yodoyabashi / Kyobashi Staition
↓ 490 JPY
End: Gion-Shijo / Fushimi Inari Staition

Best for: Fushimi Inari, Kiyomizu-dera

Which Line is Best for Your Destination?

To save time and money, choose the train line that stops closest to the sights you want to see.

1. JR Line: Best for Fushimi Inari and Arashiyama

JR Osaka station
  • Best for Arashiyama & Fushimi Inari (Transfer at Kyoto Station)
Arashiyama: Take the JR line to Kyoto Station and switch to the JR Sagano Line. It’s only a short ride to Saga-Arashiyama Station.
Fushimi Inari: At Kyoto Station, transfer to the JR Nara Line. Inari Station is just 5 minutes away and located right in front of the shrine!
  • Note: If you are going to Kiyomizu-dera or Gion, you will need to transfer to a bus or subway at Kyoto Station, which can be very crowded.

Tip: While you need to change trains at Kyoto Station, it is still the fastest way to reach Arashiyama and Fushimi Inari from the Umeda/Osaka area. Just follow the signs for the “Sagano Line” or “Nara Line” inside the station!

2. Hankyu Railway: Best for Downtown, Nishiki Market, and Arashiyama

Hankyu
  • Heart of Kyoto: Kyoto-Kawaramachi Station is located in the absolute center of the city. It’s the best station for shopping and visiting Nishiki Market.
  • Sightseeing: It’s also very convenient for walking to Gion or Kiyomizu-dera Temple.
  • Arashiyama Access: You can also reach Arashiyama easily by transferring to the Hankyu Arashiyama line.

3. Keihan Railway: Best for Gion, Kiyomizu-dera, and Fushimi Inari

Keihan
  • Closest to Temples: Gion-Shijo Station is the most convenient station for exploring the Gion district and is the closest station to Kiyomizu-dera Temple.
(Even from the closest station, be prepared for a 15-20 minute uphill walk!)
  • Double Sightseeing: It also stops at Fushimi Inari Station, making it easy to visit both the shrine and the Gion area in one trip.

Tips

  • Check the “Limited Express” (Tokkyu): Explain that for all three lines, you should always take the “Limited Express” to save time, and it doesn’t cost extra (except for the JR Haruka or Keihan Premium Car).
  • Avoid the Buses in Kyoto: “Kyoto Station is famous, but buses from there are always crowded. Using Hankyu or Keihan to get closer to your destination is the secret to avoiding crowds!”

Which Line Should You Use? (Area-Based Advice)

Choosing the best train depends on where your hotel is located. Here is a simple guide to help you decide.

If you are staying in the UMEDA (Kita) Area:

(Hotels: APA Hotel & Resort Osaka Umeda, Hotel Granvia Osaka, etc.)

  • The Best Choice: JR Line or Hankyu Railway.
  • Why: Both stations are located right in the Umeda district.
  • Note: JR Osaka Station and Hankyu Osaka-Umeda Station are very close to each other (about a 5-minute walk), so you can choose based on your specific destination in Kyoto.

If you are staying in the NAMBA / SHINSAIBASHI (Minami) Area:

(Hotels: Citadines Namba Osaka, Onyado Nono Namba, etc.)

  • The Best Choice: Keihan Railway.
  • How to get there: 1. Take the Midosuji Subway Line (Red Line) from Namba or Shinsaibashi Station to Yodoyabashi Station. 2. Transfer to the Keihan Main Line at Yodoyabashi.

Map Guide

Umeda Hub: JR Osaka Station and Hankyu Osaka-Umeda Station are within walking distance of each other.

Yodoyabashi Hub: The Keihan Yodoyabashi Station is located a bit south of the Umeda area. It is easily accessible via a short subway ride from Namba or Shinsaibashi. Alternatively, you can take the JR Loop Line from Osaka Station to Kyobashi Station and transfer to the Keihan Line there.

My Personal Recommendation: Hankyu Line!

Both Umeda Station and Kawaramachi Station are located in the heart of Osaka and Kyoto, so I think Hankyu is the best. Plus, it is significantly cheaper than JR (410 JPY vs 580 JPY). Of course, it depends on which tourist spot you want to go to.

The Kyo-train GARAKU, which runs only on weekends, is also interesting. (A beautiful Japanese-style train that makes you feel like you are already in a Kyoto temple!)
